Tip #1
Clean out your closet. Get four big bags and label them “throw out”, “sew”, “other room”, and “donate”. “Throw out” and “donate” will be your fullest bags. If you haven’t worn it in a year, you won’t. If it’s still usable, someone else will find a need for it. The “sew” bag is for all those items that just need a button to be sewn on or an alteration. Pull these things out and take care of them so they are usable again. The “other room” bag is for those items that need to “live” in another area and just don’t belong in this closet (a place for everything and everything in its place!).
Tip #2
How do you know if you haven’t worn a piece of clothing in the last year? Hang ALL clothes in your closets backwards with the hooks facing forward from behind the rod so that it’s awkward to remove an item. When you use an item and re-hang it, you will naturally hang it up the normal way. Quickly you will see what you are wearing and what you aren't. After a year, take out anything with the hanger still backwards and get rid of it!! It works!
Tip #3
In a custom closet with a double rod, hang pants on top and shirts on the bottom. Pants don't extend out as far as shirts do, so you can see what's on the lower rod better. More light is shed on the lower rack this way. It makes your closet feel bigger since shirt sleeves won't brush you in the face. And ladies won't accidently have make-up transferred to clean clothes! The suit jackets above protrude out much further than the pants below
Tip #4
Shelves are more valuable for sweater and t-shirt storage than drawers. You can easily see what you have, and the colors jump out at you. It will be easy to find the red sweater or the purple t-shirt on a shelf. Plus shelves allow you the flexibility to use them for accessories like purses and shoes.
Tip #5:
